OCEANOGRAPHY AND WATER RESOURCES PLANNING

Ocean and water resource has remained a global economic phenomenon from history, and still continues growing rapidly around the world. It contributes substantially to the economy of many countries where massive investments are attracted to the sector. However, not much economic use is made of our water and ocean resources in Nigeria. Much of the fish we consume is imported. Shipping is underdeveloped. Inland waterways transport service is almost negligible. Even the much publicized river Niger dredging project will be no more than a colossal waste of scarce resources, because the problem is not that of much sand at the river bed, but the paucity of water flowing down from the different dams built on the river. There is virtually no viable economic plan for improving the water resource sector. This faculty seeks to attract attention to the nature and characteristics of the water resources industry in most countries, to arouse interest to explore how the industry can be better planned, marketed, and well managed.
